News: Upgraded Computer Room Now Open!

The Y’s newly upgraded computer center reopened on September 5th, complete with eight new computers and new furniture. The furniture is nice, but the real story is the machines. We custom built them, basing them on AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processors and used good components all the way through, including the graphics cards. I’m used to using good computers and having a good one of my own, but I turn these on and my reaction is “Wow.” Yes, they have Microsoft Office installed on them, they have high speed internet access and all that, but the machines are really hot when it comes to anything involving graphics. And the real critics, the kids that use these machines as their primary computers, agree. Zero complaints is a pretty good indicator. (And by the way, the kids were involved in all phases of the project, from building the machines to doing some of the wiring of the building. They own this stuff.) We’ve had the kids go through a detailed review of the rules before they were allowed to use the machines and in the first three days we had over thirty kids qualify. The machines will definitely be heavily used. These machines were funded by grant money donated to the Y, and their main use will be to provide computer access to kids who otherwise would have very limited access. Of course, the room is open to adults too. In fact, make a point of dropping in and seeing just how nice this equipment is.
